On April 30, 1986 during Game 7 against the Calgary Flames, Edmonton Oiler rookie defenseman Steve Smith attempted to clear the puck from behind the goal line, only to have the puck ricochet off Grant Fuhr's skates and into the net. Smith's accidental goal in his own team's net proved to be the game and series winner. Smith went on to a solid NHL career but will forever be known as the player singled out for derailing a potential 5-peat Stanley Cup Championship Dynasty for the Edmonton Oilers. The Calgary Flames would eventually lose to the Montreal Canadiens in the Stanley Cup Finals.

In his book, Robinson on Defence, Robinson recalled his hit on Philadelphia's Gary Dornhoefer, a thunderous bodycheck fans with long memories recall even to this day. It happened in the third period of Game 2 of the 1973 playoffs:

"Dorny and I had hammered each other at will. It seems as if we had an unspoken agreement: whenever we met on the ice, it would be a collision. There was no animosity, just two pros acknowledging that the other had a job to do.

"We were leading 2-1 midway through the third when Dorny led a rush up Philadelphia's right side. I was playing left defence and I angled towards him, trying to get a hip into him. He was just inside our blue line when I got my hip into him. Bang into the boards he went, and down he went. When he got up, he was looking at the boards curiously ... we had broken the boards, as it turned out. There was this big dent near the top. Players on both teams skated by the area, sneaking looks and shaking their heads.

"After the game," Robinson wrote, "Gary took great pains to tell the reporters that 'Robinson hits like a pussycat.' "

Durbano Instigates a Brawl in MSG

The late Steve Durbano of the St. Louis Blues had an interesting hockey career to be polite. And apparently, his life off the ice was equally strange. You can read a short biography of Durbano here.

This was a game between the Blues and Rangers in Madison Square Garden in 1979. From the broadcast, one gathers that Brian Sutter scored his third goal of the game (assisted by the highly underrated Bernie Federko).

Steve Durbano skates across the ice to fight New York's finest Nick Fotiu. A brawl ensues between the two teams. The crowd absolutely goes wild, chanting, "We Want Nick". Durbano upon his exit from the game, moons the New York fans. Now at least we all know whom Randy Moss should give credit to his end zone welcoming of the Green Bay Packer fans a few years back.

McCarty's 1997 Stanley Cup Final GWG

Nilan Incites Chaos in the Boston Garden

Chris "Knuckles" Nilan of the Montreal Canadiens nearly starts a full scale riot involving fans, the Bruin bench, Coach Terry O'Reilly and a few police officers. Jay Miller of the Bruins had to be pinned to the ice and restrained like an animal by linseman Kevin Collins. While being escorted off the ice, Nilan decides to take a swipe at Ken Linseman ensuing all hell to break loose. Note to the NHL - it was completely idiotic to have the rampway that leads to the visitor dressing room passing through the Boston home bench. Just watch the video as this becomes very self-evident.

Ron Hextall could have been a Hall of Famer had not reoccurring injuries and a horrible temper override his revolutionary style of goaltending. Current goalies such as Martin Brodeur owe Ron Hextall a debt of gratitude. Until Hextall, goaltenders very rarely left the crease to forward pass the puck and jump start an offensive attack.

As a rookie, Hextall helped a Mike Keenan coached young Flyers team to reach the Stanley Cup Finals against the high octaned Edmonton Oilers. After complaining to the referee that he was interfered in the crease by opposing Oiler forwards (specifically Glenn Anderson's hockey stick to his goal pads), Hextall's temper got the best of him and he took matters into his own hands - and goalie stick - by clubbing Kent Nilsson with a two-hander. Hextall received a major penalty. The Oilers went on to win the Stanley Cup in 7 games. Hextall was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy as the Most Valuable Player in the Playoffs.

On May 6 1988, New Jersey head coach Jim Schoenfeld confronts referee Don Koharski at the conclusion of a play-off game. All hell breaks loose in the foyer leading to the Official's Room. When the NHL initially refused to enforce their 1 game suspension of Jim Schoenfeld (the Devils seeked and won a court injunction permitting him to coach), the entire NHL Officiating Staff staged a wild cat strike resulting in replacement officials to be utilized for the next Devils - Bruins playoff match. Schoenfeld and Koharski have since kissed, made up and apparently do get along.

1984 Good Friday Brawl: Canadiens vs. Nordiques

I was just a kid when this brawl occurred. This was back in the days when Quebec City was in the NHL. The Batttle of Quebec was a viscious rivalry between the Habs and the Nordiques. It literally divided the province for over a decade. Bruce Hood devoted an entire chapter in his autobiography on this brawl.
