Nilan Incites Chaos in the Boston Garden

Chris "Knuckles" Nilan of the Montreal Canadiens nearly starts a full scale riot involving fans, the Bruin bench, Coach Terry O'Reilly and a few police officers. Jay Miller of the Bruins had to be pinned to the ice and restrained like an animal by linseman Kevin Collins. While being escorted off the ice, Nilan decides to take a swipe at Ken Linseman ensuing all hell to break loose. Note to the NHL - it was completely idiotic to have the rampway that leads to the visitor dressing room passing through the Boston home bench. Just watch the video as this becomes very self-evident.

Gretzky Finally Beats Billy Smith

On 5/17/84 at Northlands Coliseum, Wayne Gretzky scores on a breakaway against nemesis Billy Smith in Game 3 of the 1984 Stanley Cup Final. The Oilers go on to win the series 4-1 and capture their first Stanley Cup. The year before, the Islanders swept the Oilers in the finals largely due to the brilliant goaltending of Smith. This may have been the most significant goal of Gretzky's career.

European Ice Rugby & Ugly Referee Uniforms

Ever wonder what happened to those canary yellow Los Angeles Kings' helmets? Bruce McNall must have sold them to the European Ice Hockey Official Federation (or whatever they call themselves)for extra cash. The refs look like a gang of Skeletors. Simply FUGLY. Enjoy this little slice of European rugby on ice that leaves two players down for the count.

Lindbergh Stops Bjugstads

Had he not died in a tragic car crash, Pelle Lindbergh might have gone down in the history books as the greatest goaltender. Enjoy this rare footage of a Lindbergh save on what seems to be a penalty shot (judging by the referee's position) against Minnesota North Star Scott Bjugstads.

Phil Esposito Retirement Night

A touch of class from Ray Bourque for surrendering #7 to Bruins legend Phil Esposito on his long-overdue retirement night at the old Boston Garden. The night is more remembered by many for Bourque's generosity than the retirement of Esposito's #7.

An Incredible Pass from Bobby Orr

This is an unbelievable pass from Bobby Orr to Johnny Bucyk who puts the puck past Gilles Gilbert. Last season's rookie sensation Washington Capital Alex Ovechkin scored a goal similar to this play by Orr.

Hextall's Two Handed Slash on Nilsson

Ron Hextall could have been a Hall of Famer had not reoccurring injuries and a horrible temper override his revolutionary style of goaltending. Current goalies such as Martin Brodeur owe Ron Hextall a debt of gratitude. Until Hextall, goaltenders very rarely left the crease to forward pass the puck and jump start an offensive attack.

As a rookie, Hextall helped a Mike Keenan coached young Flyers team to reach the Stanley Cup Finals against the high octaned Edmonton Oilers. After complaining to the referee that he was interfered in the crease by opposing Oiler forwards (specifically Glenn Anderson's hockey stick to his goal pads), Hextall's temper got the best of him and he took matters into his own hands - and goalie stick - by clubbing Kent Nilsson with a two-hander. Hextall received a major penalty. The Oilers went on to win the Stanley Cup in 7 games. Hextall was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy as the Most Valuable Player in the Playoffs.

Dennis Wideman's Shootout Mishap

Some guys are born with a God given talent for shootouts. St. Louis Blues defenseman Dennis Wideman clearly was not granted such a talent. The broadcasters comments are priceless.

Wensink Challenges the North Stars Bench

On December 1 1977, John Wensink absolutely beats the crap out of an unidentifiable Minnesota player. (Bonus footage of a very animated Terry O'Reilly destroying another North Star as well). Wensink then challenges the entire North Star bench. There were no takers.

Gretzky Hammered by McCreary

Toronto defenseman Bill McCreary (not the same as the better known NHL referee) absolutely croaks a young Wayne Gretzky while attempting to cross the offensive blue line with his head down. Welcome to the NHL!

Gilmour's 1993 2OT Playoff Game 2 Winner

No player was more valuable to his team in 1993 play-offs than Doug Gilmour. He was at the peak of his career with his years with the Maple Leafs. Gilmour closes the book on Game 2 in double over-time with his behind the net wrap-around game winner against Curtis Joseph of the St. Louis Blues. Joseph would later join the Leafs for several seasons.

Referee Bodychecked

Not sure where this occurred, but judging by the funky uniforms, I'm assuming this game was played in Europe. It seems that this ice hockey official was deliberately checked into the boards by this defenseman.

Doughnut Gate

On May 6 1988, New Jersey head coach Jim Schoenfeld confronts referee Don Koharski at the conclusion of a play-off game. All hell breaks loose in the foyer leading to the Official's Room. When the NHL initially refused to enforce their 1 game suspension of Jim Schoenfeld (the Devils seeked and won a court injunction permitting him to coach), the entire NHL Officiating Staff staged a wild cat strike resulting in replacement officials to be utilized for the next Devils - Bruins playoff match. Schoenfeld and Koharski have since kissed, made up and apparently do get along.

1984 Good Friday Brawl: Canadiens vs. Nordiques

I was just a kid when this brawl occurred. This was back in the days when Quebec City was in the NHL. The Batttle of Quebec was a viscious rivalry between the Habs and the Nordiques. It literally divided the province for over a decade. Bruce Hood devoted an entire chapter in his autobiography on this brawl.
